Major General ‘Sandy’ Thomas CB, DSO, MC and Bar, ED, Silver Star (USA) and Army Commander, Far East Land Forces faced unbelievable odds and lived to tell the tale after surviving fierce battles, being severely wounded, escaping a German prisoner-of-war hospital and being at large in Greece for 15 months before reaching the Allies side of the war front - and going on to fight again.
After victory, this New Zealand soldier joined the British Army and rose to the highest rank during a distinguished career in which he saw action in many theatres of battle around the world.
