  | A History of The Brisbane Apollo Male Choir 1884 - 2026$33.00 AUDTo hear a lusty male choir in full throat is as uplifting for the performers as it is for anyone within earshot. But membership of a choir demands the discipline of regular attendance for practices and performances. The Apollo choir had its origins when horse and buggy transport was needed, and in 1884 when this institution was founded, the roll-call of the first members reveals many lived hours away from home by foot, horse or pedal power, so they truly must have enjoyed their get-togethers in a German Beer Hall tradition of camaraderie around a table of good cheer while singing the songs made famous by their happy renditions.
Starting as The Brisbane Liedertafel Society, it attracted world-wide attention and membership. But WWI changed the image of German traditions, so the choir changed its name to the Brisbane Apollo Club, and continues to provide a wonderful contribution to the culture of a vibrant, convivial society.
It was the Clubs and Coffee Houses that made Great Britain great. Informal interchange of information and knowledge between trusted friends in convivial circumstances is the best defence against artificial attempts to replace intelligence.
This is the story of a unique organisation that continues to prove it is better to give than to receive.
