The testing procedures presented in this manual form the basis of assessments used in many studies of neuro-sensory and motor development of 'high risk' infants and children in their first six years.

The NSMDA is a valid and reliable test for determining if a child's motor development is within the expected range for age and for identifying major or minor neuro-sensory and motor difficulties, and predicting outcome. It is useful for evaluating and recording motor developmental progress over time and for recognising the degree to which a problem may interfere with function and require intervention.
